Many people who suffered due to the Dust Bowl moved to California like the Joads'. California is known as the "Promised Land" because of the jobs and work there. If only California could support all of the families moving there.
Since there are so many families in need of jobs, they will work for whatever they can get their hands on. Work is difficult to find because many families want the same job. Families want to support their children and provide them what they deserve: a roof over their heads, food, and an education. Many sacrifices are made by families in these times.
The wages fall because the workers don't demand much money for the work they do. They will work on low wages so the wages lower. However, once all of the jobs are taken and there is no more available work, the "promise" in "Promised Land" will no longer be in California.
